How to Get a Roadworthy Certificate in Tasmania

NOTE: Be aware that owners of vehicles that are subject to the compulsory defective Takata airbag recall may be required to provide proof that the defective airbags have been replaced by an authorised vehicle dealer before a roadworthy inspection can be performed.

All privately owned passenger vehicles in Tasmania have to undergo periodic roadworthy inspections, with the period between inspections depending on the age of the vehicle. In addition, inspections of a private passenger vehicle may be required in the following circumstances-

  • if the vehicle is not currently registered in Tasmania; this includes new vehicles that are being registered for the first time, as well as vehicles that have current interstate registrations
  • if the vehicle’s registration had lapsed or expired more than three months ago
  • to clear defect notices that can only be cleared through an inspection at an Approved Inspection Station
  • to obtain a type approval
  • to transfer ownership of the vehicle
  • if the vehicle is subject to a mandatory call-in notice

In the case of public passenger vehicles with a seating capacity of 10 or more persons, but not including taxis, roadworthy inspections are required under the following circumstances-

  • an initial inspection if the vehicle is less than 12 months old
  • an annual inspection if the vehicle is older than 12 months until the vehicle is 15 years old
  • an inspection every six months if the vehicle is older than 15 years

In the case of public passenger vehicles with a seating capacity of 10 or fewer persons, but not including taxis or hire-and-drive vehicles, inspections are required under the following circumstances- `

  • an initial inspection if the vehicle is less than 3 years old
  • an annual inspection of the vehicle is older than 12 months until the vehicle is 15 years old
  • an inspection every six months if the vehicle is older than 15 years

In the case of hire-and-drive vehicles with a seating capacity of fewer than 10 persons, inspections are required under the following circumstances-

  • no inspections are required if the vehicle is less than 3 years old
  • an annual inspection  if the vehicle is between 3 and 15 years old
  • an inspection every six months if the vehicle is older than 15 years

In the case of taxis, an inspection is required under the following circumstances-

  • an initial inspection if the vehicle is less than 12 months old
  • an annual inspection if the vehicle is older than 12 months

How long are roadworthy certificates valid in Tasmania?

Roadworthy certificates are valid for a period of 42 days but note that according to this official state government source, you have up to three months to establish a Tasmanian registration if your vehicle is already registered in a state or territory other than Tasmania.
